“Their world opened a door in me, and I want to hold it open for others.”
When I was a kid, my family would visit John and Kimiko Powers in Colorado. They didn’t just collect art, they lived inside it.
John would guide me past Warhols and Jasper Johns with an excited gleam, asking, “What do you see?” I didn’t know it then, but he was rewiring how I saw the world. Years later, as an artist and filmmaker, I realized how deeply those early encounters shaped my creative instincts.
This film is driven by a personal urgency to honor a legacy rooted not in wealth or exclusivity, but in wonder, connection, and the belief that art should be lived with, argued over, and shared.

Tyler Oliver is a filmmaker and artist whose work explores the human condition. Gaining rare access to worlds few outsiders see, he has filmed on death row, worked inside government intelligence agencies, and documented subcultures including China’s underground punk scene.
The Powers: A Life in Art returns to a world he first encountered as a child and carries its invitation forward.
